Your future position
As a Senior Fullstack Engineer for the MarineTraffic Inbox crew, your mission is to be an engineering leader, driving high-impact initiatives that make our email client reliable, scalable, and easy to evolve.
You'll work across our existing platform while helping us build the next generation of our architecture. We're maintaining our legacy Ruby on Rails platform for BAU while rewriting core backend components as modern, event-driven microservices, using technologies including Ruby on Rails, Python, Node.js, TypeScript, and Kafka.
You don't need to be an expert in every technology we use. We're open to engineers coming from different backend backgrounds. What matters most is your ability to design and build reliable microservices and large-scale distributed systems, solve complex technical problems, and work effectively with distributed systems. Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures, particularly Kafka, is highly valued. We're also looking for someone who can quickly build an understanding of the email and shipping domains. You'll have opportunities to expand your technology skill set as you grow into the role.
You'll also work closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders, while mentoring junior and mid-level engineers and helping shape how we build and operate our systems.
Your mission is to:
•
Design and Build End-to-End Features: Develop scalable and high-performance frontend and backend systems, working across the stack with technologies like AWS, K8S, Ruby on Rails (our legacy system), Python , Node.js and Vue.js.
•
Lead Strategic Alignment and Initiatives: Drive high-impact engineering initiatives and manage technical communication with engineering managers, product managers, designers, and customers independently to ensure solutions align with critical business and reliability requirements.
•
Champion Engineering Excellence: Write robust, maintainable code and implement best practices around testing, CI/CD, performance, observability and reliability.
•
Architect Scalable Systems: Design and implement distributed systems and microservices with event-driven architecture using Kafka.
•
Maintain and Scale Tech Stack: This role offers a unique balance - you'll lead the scaling efforts of our production Rails environment to keep pace with our growth, while simultaneously architecting 'greenfield' components as we refactor toward our future-state tech stack.
•
Mentor and Coach: Serve as an engineering leader by mentoring junior and mid-level engineers on development best practices, engineering operational excellence, and complex system design.
•
Own Operations and Reliability: Take part in monitoring, incident response, production support and performance tuning across the stack.
•
Contribute to Agile Culture: Actively participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies to continuously improve team practices.
This could be a match if you have:
• 6+ years of experience developing production-grade applications with Ruby on Rails, Python, and/or Node.js.
•
Hands-on experience designing, implementing, and operating microservices and large-scale distributed systems.
•
Strong understanding of event-driven architecture; hands-on experience with Kafka is highly valued.
• Hands-on experience building frontend applications with Vue.js or React and TypeScript.
•
Proficiency in MySQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis.
•
Familiarity with AWS and infrastructure orchestration tools like Kubernetes and Helm.
•
Deep understanding of data structures, distributed systems, and system design principles.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, technical leadership and mentoring, strong adherence to Agile methodologies, decisive and purpose-driven (we make things happen), supportive and collaborative nature (we always help each other).
•
Experience integrating SDKs and APIs into web
•
Exposure to DevOps tooling and practices (GitHub Actions, observability, SonarQube, etc.).
•
Prior work in fast-paced, product-focused environments or the maritime/logistics domain.
